Deepchandi, a rhythmic cycle of 14 beats, is a popular taal in semi-classical and folk music. It is the vocalist’s top choice when singing a hori.

The taal has four internal divisions (vibhag): 3+4+3+4. A pulse can be felt after three beats, seven beats, ten beats, and fourteen beats. The major pulse (sam) occurs after every 14 beats and the minor pulse at the eighth beat is a khali.

A single rest (marked “s” below) in every division of the theka gives deepchandi its characteristic flow.
